Horizons College and The Local Community
Horizons College aims for learners to access their local community as much as possible. From enrichment trips to work experience, it is important for our young adults to gain experience and understanding of the world around them.
We have completed several bikeathons this academic year as part of our fundraising for a minibus. Having our own minibus will allow our learners to continue accessing the community and be able to transfer their work and independence skills into a variety of real life settings. Alongside volunteering and work experience opportunities, our learners will also be able to attend a variety of enrichment activities and even a residential trip.
Our bikeathons have been held in a variety of settings from leisure centres to supermarkets with different groups of learners taking turns on the bike each time. Each bikeathon event challenges our learners to cycle a combined total of 50 miles, although we have had support from our staff and even Swindon Town FC before! Not only have our bikeathon events raised money, they have allowed our learners to receive positive encouragement and support from their local community.
Horizons College’s Internal Community
Not only does Horizons College encourage integration with the local community, we strongly believe in our own community within our two sites, The Learning Centre and Headlands. Although our learners are incredibly varied individuals we encourage them to socialise with and support their peers as much as possible. Some of our learners volunteer in other classes, helping with the running of class enterprises or with individual care and support of their peers. This helps to develop friendships and provides a real sense of achievement and pride in our learners.
We are advocates for independence and endeavour to provide opportunities for our learners to use their voice and have their say. We recently held a Mock General Election which provided a sense of participation and realism for our leaners; we also have a student council with representatives from every class who meet regularly to help shape the college’s future.
