Careers Week 2022

March 22nd 2022 saw the start of an amazing Careers Week event at Horizons College. The learners were introduced to a range of local employers including: The Brunel Centre, the Great Western Hospital/Serco, Double Tree Hilton, Waitrose, Barnes Coaches, Wiltshire Police and Active Inclusive. Our young people learned about the variety of job roles, entry requirements and opportunities available to them in these industries. They were engaged in a variety of activities including, recognising health and safety hazards in the workplace, question and answer sessions, health care bingo and customer/guest role play.

 The learners were also supported with their future career development and choices by external organisations such as the Career Collective with workshops on how to develop their own sustainable career management strategies and how to present themselves appropriately to employers; and ASK, who provided information relating to Apprenticeships and Traineeships.

 Both the learners and the employers enjoyed the week. Many of the presenters echoed the sentiment of this employer: “The students engaged fantastically. Their knowledge and listening skills were great we look forward to returning for mock interviews”. We also received excellent feedback from our young people who feel they have learned: “that anyone can get a job; there is no judgement even if you have a disability” and “you can achieve anything”. One learner stated that “I changed my thoughts, made me think about a career, in a way that now I know more about working in a hotel”.
