Supported Internship - Project Search

Who is this course for?

This is a workplace-based programme for learners aged between 18-24 years who have additional needs. You must have the desire and motivation to achieve full-time (16+ hours) paid employment at the end of the programme.

About the course

This Supported Internship course is offered in partnership with Project Search and ASDA West Swindon. SI ASDA is a full-time course, Monday – Friday, during term-time, and runs for one academic year. The course is based on-site in the ASDA West Swindon store. The programme is designed to enable you to successfully transition into adult life and work towards sustainable, full-time paid employment.

Throughout the week, you will be working within the ASDA store, in one of the many departments they have to offer (examples include: customer service, home shopping, house wares, fresh foods, bakery, George clothing, warehouse, administration etc.). You will do three rotations in total during the academic year (10-12 weeks each), giving you an opportunity to develop a wide variety of specific and transferable skills.

You will also have employability sessions each morning, again held onsite at ASDA, in a designated classroom. These will be run by a trained member of Horizons College staff and will include topics such as workplace communication and interview techniques. You will work towards a relevant employability and functional skills accreditation (Entry 3 to Level 2).

Support

You will be supported by a Job Coach and course lead from Horizons College as well as having designated ASDA mentors to help you learn the tasks and job roles. The aim is for you to be able to work independently (without the support of a Job Coach) and be ready to gain paid employment by the end of the course. We will work with you to achieve this and will provide additional support for 6 months after the course ends (if required).

Entry Requirements

You must have an EHCP (Education, Health & Care Plan). Applicants should be working at Entry Level 3 (or above, up to Level 2). Your Local Authority will need to consult with Horizons College in order to secure funding for your placement.

Moving on

After completing the Supported Internship programme learners will be equipped to progress into paid employment, in a full-time role (16+ hours per week). Where possible, employment will be within ASDA, but it may also be with another local company/organisation which reflects your interests and aspirations.
